I like Final Fantasy 8 more than Final Fantasy 7

Now when you read that, a few of you are like: “What the hell man!? You Must be crazy! I’m gonna kick ya ass sucka man! What are you smoking!!?? Share!”

Don’t get me wrong, I like FF7. First FF game in 3D, and it is awesome. Barret with his awesome gun for a hand! Cloud, Tifa, Aeris, Sephiroth, all kick ass! I just like Final Fantasy 8 more, in fact Final Fantasy 8 is my favorite Final Fantasy, and here are some of the reasons why.

1. Squall Leonhart. Yes, he doesn’t follow the conventional protagonist rule of male heroes with blond hair that should look like Gackt. No he doesn’t! Final Fantasy 8 is different, and Squall is one of the reasons why. Sure in the beggining of the game, he does seem emo-like, laconic, and arguably damn near suicidal. But you get in the game, and he as a character starts to grow, and becomes what all Final Fantasy heroes are.

2. Draw Mechanic. Yes I will fully admit, it is one weird game mechanic. Instead of using MP for magic spells, you instead use draw points. Each magic spell has draw points attached to it. You draw magic from enemies, more points you get, more times you can use that spell. But with that, you can apply those points to stats of the characters in a “junction”. You can magic to stats, strength, luck, things like that, more magic you have, the higher that stat goes. If done right, you might not even need to use summons, or GFs in FF8’s case in hard fights.

3. Story. ” In a time of both sophisticated technology and powerful magic, an evil sorceress corrupts the world’s largest military power through manipulation and deception, enslaving mankind to do her bidding. Her goal is not something as simple as world domination; but to completely conquer all of space and time.
To counter the turn of events, various leaders head combat training schools, known as Gardens, that turn out elite fighting forces. Known as SeeDs, they defend, serve, and protect humankind from the sorceress. The sole purpose of these academies is to vanquish the sorceress and save humanity as we know it, although they take many other assignments for the right price.

A small, loose-knit group of SeeD graduates find themselves wrapped in a much bigger endeavor than simple military combat. Now, a gunblade specialist, together with a diverse group of young heroes, must set aside his fears, face the emotions he’s run from, and become the leader that he never wanted to be.” Taken from ffonline.com

Filled with love, anger, mystery, flashbacks and great dialogue make FF8’s plot a one to remember. Plot is more personal than previous FFs. Covers all four disks, always giving new information, but never enough to connect everything until you actually watch the ending FMV.

There you go, some of the reasons why Final Fantasy 8 is my favorite one. Again, you got a problem with the reasoning, go ahead and sent me angry emails, IMs and such, you wanna fight about it? See me in the apple orchard son!

  • Great essay you got there, I completely agree with you. Although I am gonna have to still call FF7 my #1, FF8 is a close #2 for me. My least favorite FF game being FF9, cause GOD I HATE CLASS SYSTEMS!…Anyhoo, it was a great read and put to words a lot of things I couldn’t convey to people who wondered why I liked 8 so much (I’ll refer them to this page ;). Also, it’s nice to see your not getting trashed….as soon as I read the Title I immediately scrolled down to see how much hate mail would be here…..glad to see none.
